A world survey of artificial brain projects, Part I: Large-scale brain simulations

چکیده
Driven by rapid ongoing advances in computer hardware, neuroscience and computer science, Artificial Brain research and development are blossoming. This article constitutes the first half of a two-part world survey of artificial brain projects: this part dealing with large-scale brain simulations, and the second part with biologically inspired cognitive architectures (BICAs). The large-scale brain simulations we consider in depth here include those by Markram, Modha, Boahen, Horwitz, Edelman, Izhikevich, and Just. As well as reviewing the particulars of these simulation projects, we position them in a broader perspective, comparing at the different underlying definitions of the concept of ‘‘simulation,’’ noting that in many ways the projects are modeling neurosystems at different levels as well as using different methodologies. & 2010 Elsevier B.V. A world survey of artificial brain projects, Part II: Biologically inspired cognitive architectures
A number of leading cognitive architectures that are inspired by the human brain, at various levels of granularity, are reviewed and compared, with special attention paid to the way their internal structures and dynamics map onto neural processes. Four categories of Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures (BICAs) are considered, with multiple examples of each category briefly reviewed, an...

متن کاملP27: Brain Network as a Pivotal Part in Intelligence Function
Neuroimaging findings have proposed that some brain regions including the precuneus, posterior cingulate, and medial prefrontal cortex play an essential role of a structural core in the brain. Network organization endures rapid alterations in development with changes in axonal synaptic connectivity, white matter volume, and the thickness of corresponding cortical regions. Structural maturation ...
متن کاملImproving the Izhikevich Model Based on Rat Basolateral Amygdala and Hippocampus Neurons, and Recognizing Their Possible Firing Patterns
Introduction: Identifying the potential firing patterns following different brain regions under normal and abnormal conditions increases our understanding of events at the level of neural interactions in the brain. Furthermore, it is important to be capable of modeling the potential neural activities to build precise artificial neural networks. The Izhikevich model is one of the simplest biolog...
متن کاملA LARGE BRAIN HYDATID CYST AND CARDIAC INVOLVEMENT
Echinococcosis is endemic in many sheep-raising areas of the world. Cardiac involvement in patients with hydatid disease is uncommon (<2%). Here, we report a 30-year-old shepherd from Oshnavie, West Azarbaijan who was presented with right hemiparesis and admitted in neurosurgery ward of Imam Khomeini Hospital, Urmia, Iran because of a large cystic lesion in brain MRI. There was left bundle bran...
